An artist’s home in South East London was in need of expansion for both a growing family and a place to work and display artwork in an inspirational environment.

The end of terraced house sandwiched between a boundary wall and back to back gardens presented a thin, unusual footprint to extend two-storeys into. We opened the entire void, expressing the internal roof form and placed a mezzanine within the space to function as both a bedroom suite or a creative space to work in. Connecting the separate wing to the existing 1970s house, we extended single storey into the garden carefully balancing the sense of open plan and privacy with other alterations to the existing floor plan.

The successful collaboration of artist and architect allowed a creative freedom with materials and attention to colour and finishes of a bold and playful composition. Polished concrete floors, painted brickwork, natural plywood soffits, oak joinery and painted metal balustrades all contribute to the artist and family’s identity.
