Surbiton Crescent

2019-2022

Surbiton Crescent presents a carefully crafted scheme on a difficult site. The architectural response is a refined, contemporary approach to that of its traditional neighbour.

An existing single-storey hairdressers occupied an awkward triangular site. Working with an existing client the brief was for a change of use to residential apartments. Four spacious, bright apartments are split over four floors, with the top level providing shared amenity space. Construction was a logistical challenge with no space for parking or storing of materials with the building footprint filling the site.

The neighbouring locally listed building provided an important reference point for the design of the proposed building. The projecting bay window is replicated with the set back of the entrance section, and the change in angle to the façade allows the sunlight to add interest as it passes around the building. The use of large sash windows with stone banding make a clear reference to the adjacent building. All elevation characteristics are executed with a subtle contemporary interpretation, and the crisp zinc façade to the top-level caps off the development whilst also ensuring a sense of independence from the neighbouring building.
