Surbiton Crescent

2017

LOCATION – Kingston upon Thames

PROJECT TYPE – Housing

CLIENT – Commercial

PROJECT STATUS – In progress

Situated on an awkward corner plot at the crossroads of Surbiton Crescent and Surbiton Rd, a redundant shop premises is uncomfortably positioned next to a four storey, locally listed Arcadian building and in need of redevelopment.

The proposal is to demolish the existing shop and change the use of the existing shop to residential in the form of two duplex flats. Our aim is to resolve the street scene by creating a building whose scale and mass is appropriate for the context of the site and one that reinforces the urban block. We reinterpret the existing buildings typology in a modern, cohesive way, continuing proportions, datums and openings to provide consistency across.

We introduce a two-storey bay similar to the existing host building to form an equal stop-end to the urban block enabling both buildings to be read as one rather than as two distinctly separate developments. Materials will be of painted render and stone with a lightweight roof structure of insulated glazed panels.
