An existing grade-II listed thatched cottage in rural Hampshire, requiring a rational approach to the ground floor through re-configuration of the existing kitchen and the addition of an extension.
The extension links the kitchen to a much-needed utility space via a new side access. The social spaces of the dining and living room are enlarged through an oak-framed gable extension.
Maximising the amount of glazing in the oak frame ensures the existing dark and isolated living room maximises natural light whilst also linking to the garden. Materials were chosen to be considerate to the listing of the cottage and express the traditional workmanship of oak frame, clay tile, leadwork and weatherboarding.
