Creative Design

  • Designing both new build and refurbishment/ retrofit schemes.

  • Working with a range of scales – from strategic site master planning to a subtle intervention in a family’s home.

  • Testing the feasibility of a brief – From an appraisal of the existing building or site, we aim to find solutions that are beautiful and well-made but also can be achieved with minimal intervention and cost.

  • We take inspiration from designing details that are influenced by local vernacular and tradition.

Sustainable Conservation

HISTORY
What determines historic value. We are not deterred by radical intervention. We work with heritage consultants to ensure an accurate portrayal of a building’s history is established before testing commences.
MATERIALS

Reclaim/ re-use/ recycle. We specify beautiful materials using local suppliers and tradesmen where possible.

GOOD ARCHITECTURE LASTS

We plan for the whole life cycle of a building and where appropriate for disassembly and re-use.

ECOLOGY

We aim to enhance the wider biodiversity of the site. The impact of the building and construction process needs careful management to maintain the delicate balance of the wider site’s ecosystem.

Placemaking

  • Conversion and dialogue are central to a building’s success. Engagement with funders, owners, neighbours and the wider community requires an ability to shape the brief to ensure the variety of priorities are balanced and achievable.
  • We frequently engage with public consultation at an early stage of a project to hear people’s views and provide a democratic pathway to making a place which can be enjoyed by all.
  • Our role as Architects is to design places that contribute to vibrant, healthy communities. Whether it is a project for new housing to meet the local demand, or a new building that needs to be carefully knitted into the fabric of a Conservation area, the impact of that building can be felt at a societal level. Through good design, buildings that have resilience contribute positively towards our communities.
