The Lifeboat Strip

2015 - 2019

An intricately crafted pair of new-build semi-detached houses on the beautiful north Devon coastline. The project references the historic rhythm of the conservation area with subtle modern interventions.

The proposed dwellings are built on a strategically challenging site that has sloping topography and a triangular footprint. Great care was taken to ensure there was no overlooking and that privacy is maintained between the dwellings. The floor plans are carefully configured to offer double garages, open-plan living spaces with terraces overlooking the sea, and four bedrooms, with one dwelling benefiting from a private rooftop terrace.

Located on the edge of a conservation area typified by Victorian terraces, the proposals look to respect the local detailing whilst reinterpreting these details in a contemporary, minimalist way. Aluminium-framed sliding doors with minimal sightlines are framed with local Portland stone reveals. Glass balustrades and cantilevered roofs allow one to take in uninterrupted, expansive views over the estuary, while also providing a form that fits sympathetically within the context of colourful painted terraces and the roof form of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
