Reynard Close

2015-2016

A residence in Southeast London, belonging to an artist, required expansion to home both a growing family and provide an inspiring environment for creating and displaying art and sculpture.

A thin, awkward space was left over between the boundary wall of a school and the flank wall of the end of terraced house. This presented a unique opportunity for extending into. We maximised this space by utilising the entire void, expressing the internal vaulted roof form and inserting a mezzanine to flexibly function as both a bedroom suite and a creative space to work in.

Connecting the separate wing to the existing 1970s house, we extended into the garden, carefully balancing the sense of open plan and privacy with other alterations to the existing floor plan. Each surface was considered alongside the art that occupied it – much like curating an exhibition. The project was an enjoyable collaboration that inspired a sense of creative freedom, especially with materials and colour. Polished concrete floors, painted brickwork, natural plywood soffits, oak joinery and painted metal balustrades all contribute to celebrate the identity of the artist and her family.
