An ambitious scheme for fifteen new affordable flats and houses, driven by maximising the biodiversity net gain on site and utilising the sites position and topography.
An awkward site within an existing built-up area lacked definition as a result of a ‘left-over’ portion of land from previous housing developments. Its topography and proximity close to a rat-run of roads to local schools made it unsuitable for ball games and general recreation. Therefore, the biggest priority of the scheme was to make the site much more usable to the community for recreation and enjoyment
The Tiny Forest initiative forms a direct community engagement incentive with the planting and maintenance of this intense area of woodland, whilst carefully planned pedestrian routes through the site around native species of grassland and hedgerows provide areas for enjoyment and links through the site. The proposed flats had the challenge of providing the numbers of units required whilst not negatively impacting on the existing houses and landscape and biodiversity scheme. The change in angle in the building responds to the orientation of other buildings on site whilst also assisting in breaking up the overall mass. This coupled with the carefully plotted landscape scheme meant the site achieved a +20% biodiversity net gain.
