A complete renovation, extension and overhaul of an existing 1980s detached dwelling in Surrey. This project was bold in the forms it created, the spaces it revealed, and the technology it incorporated.
Like with most 1980s detached dwellings of this type, there is great potential with the size of the plot to create a substantial home for a growing family. The resultant 6-bedroom dwelling does not compromise on room sizes, despite also including feature double height spaces, and glass walkways that peer down into the polished concrete living spaces below.
The rear ground floor extensions are the show piece, with angular roof forms intersected and bouncing off each other, where large expanses of glazing appear to seamlessly hold up these roof volumes above. This adds volume and interest to the internal spaces they serve, and forms open plan spaces that are defined through their function and subtle angle changes rather than through dividing partitions. Whilst bringing the accommodation to a level suitable for a growing family, incorporating full array of PV panels and bore hole extracted heat pumps ensured the dwelling was built for the future.
