Burwood

2018 - 2020

A striking contemporary extension and renovation to an existing arts and crafts dwelling with clean lines, intriguing forms and intricate detailing. Burwood demonstrates how a contemporary response can be cohesive with traditional origins.

The large existing dwelling expresses its strong arts and crafts detailing to both its externals and organisation of spaces internally. FlowerKittle were presented with a design brief to provide a more social family space which the property lacked, along with increasing the size of the existing garage in a sensitive way. The clients were very open-minded with their initial design brief giving us freedom to explore the different forms and design solutions.

The bold corten-like aluminium cladding to the rear takes the datum of the existing red tile hanging, which rests upon creamy-white brickwork that runs away into the limestone paving. The carefully shaped and placed inclusions of glazing make reference to the existing bay windows, and the main sliding pocket glass enables the space to be opened up to further extend the floor plan into the mature garden. The forms are playful with chamfered corners and folly-like details such as the external lightwell allowing light into the existing accommodation.
