Binton Farm House
2020-2024
A complete renovation, extension and conversion of a historic farmhouse in the Sands location of Farnham, this project demonstrates the possibilities of reusing and repurposing the existing.
The existing farmhouse along with it’s dilapidated cart barn required a creative solution to improve the outlook and orientation of the main rooms of the house. This involved integrating the cart barn into the accommodation, and upgrade the fabric to make the completed dwelling a more comfortable environment. The entrance was relocated to the perceived ‘rear’ of the property, however the reorientation of the driveway and internal modifications opened up the dwelling to the south benefiting from sunlight and creating outdoor terraces and courtyards. The link of the farmhouse and cart barn increased the available accommodation whilst creating interesting angles internally that hints at the past.
The clients had a clear brief to re-use, repurpose and salvage all the existing materials where possible. The cart barn uses the original trusses along with new carefully crafted reclaimed oak, and uses all the existing iron stone and other masonry in its original external walls. The roof incorporates all the existing slate whilst seamlessly integrating with the photovoltaic array, and the inclusion of a large ASHP with thermal upgrade to the existing house ensures the whole dwelling is using green energy. The attention to detail is continued internally with beautifully selected finishes and colours that are perfect for the farmhouse, ensuring that the revised identity of the building remains situated in its context.
